Jack Skellington & Oogie Boogie: Award-Winning Pumpkin Carving Project (Part 2)
Share
We have exciting news! Our Jack Skellington and Oogie Boogie creation won the pumpkin carving contest at our son's school! What started as a fun family project became an award-winning Halloween creation, and we're so happy to share it with you.
In Part 1 of this Halloween project, I shared how we carved Jack Skellington and Oogie Boogie for our son's school pumpkin carving contest.
Now it’s time to bring it all together!
For this project, we wanted to create a full-body Jack Skellington surrounded by an Oogie Boogie-inspired setting. It was a fun way to bring our love for The Nightmare Before Christmas into a creative family project—and to make a Halloween decoration we can keep for years to come!
I didn’t capture every step on video, but I hope sharing our process and some of the tools gives you some ideas for your own Halloween creations!
Reusing Materials We Already Had at Home
One of my favorite parts of this project was figuring out how to use materials we already had instead of buying everything new.
We repurposed wire, PVC, and an old wire rack to help build our setup. I also used black construction paper to cover the base and parts of Jack’s suit.
Before buying new supplies, take a look around your home! You may have materials tucked away that can work for your project. Get creative, adapt your design, and see what you can make with what you already have.
Supplies & Tools for Our Jack Skellington Project

Here are some of the supplies and tools we used or referenced for this project. Some were used in Part 1 for carving and shaping, while others helped with the assembly and finishing details in Part 2.
Craft pumpkins: We used reusable craft pumpkins like these so we could keep our creation and bring it back for future Halloweens.
Black construction paper: Used to cover the base and parts of Jack’s suit; you can find cheap packages on Amazon like this one.
Wire, PVC, and an old wire rack: Repurposed materials we already had at home to help create the structure; you may also be able to find these scraps at your nearest warehouse store.
Klein Tools ratcheting PVC pipe cutter: View the tool on Amazon — useful for appropriate PVC-cutting tasks when compatible with your project.
E6000 Plus clear multi-purpose adhesive: This stuff works great for so many projects! View the adhesive on Amazon.
Crayola air-dry clay: View the clay on Amazon.
Your materials may vary depending on your design. Check product instructions for safe use, including cutting, adhesive application, ventilation, and drying time.
A Halloween Project We Can Keep

We all contributed to this project as a family in one way or another, making it a very special project, spending time creating together, and finding a fun way to step away from our everyday routines.
Living in Florida also means real carved pumpkins don’t always last very long in the heat. I still love carving real pumpkins, but using craft pumpkins for this project means we can enjoy Jack and Oogie Boogie again next Halloween.
I hope this project inspires you to make something of your own, reuse what you have, and enjoy a little creative time with your family.
