Part 5 - Follow the Joy: A Journey to Finding my own Happiness

Part 5 - Follow the Joy: A Journey to Finding my own Happiness

Karina Hines

This collection is a personal reminder to prioritize joy in my life.

The Finding Joy collection was born from a simple yet powerful realization in my life: joy is a powerful feeling, a shining light to finding our purpose.

On top of that, when we follow what lights us up, we feel lighter, happier, and more present.

On this post, I share my own journey and struggles to get back to my joy as well as my very special Joy Recipe and ingredients to get you started, plus 3 simple ways to follow the joy in your life every day.

Some Personal Notes about JOY

When I learned that joy is one of the most vulnerable feelings we can experience, it helped me understand why truly feeling joy in my life had been so hard.

Growing up in El Salvador until I was 15 years old and then brought to the United States without speaking a word of English or knowing anybody or anything about this big entire new world put me in the most vulnerable state of my entire life.

I thought I knew it all at 15 in El Salvador. My life felt like it was going in a good direction, I was a good student, a scout leader with lots of family and friends, having so much fun. Then one day, a terrible earthquake hit our country and everything changed.

If I had known and practiced what I’m sharing with you now I would have found a way to my joy a lot sooner, but that's ok, and I hope you can take advantage of this knowledge NOW.

"Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity, and change." Brene Brown

Joy isn’t just a fleeting feeling—it’s a practice, a choice, and, at times, a challenge. It requires vulnerability and self-compassion, but it’s worth it.

Now lets imagine finding our joy is like crafting a special recipe, here is a basic Joy Recipe to get you started!

My recipe doesn’t always come out the way I expect, it's one of those recipes you have to keep experimenting with, keep evolving; but I’m the ONLY ONE that can make this special recipe. The good news is that the more I experiment having fun in the moment, the better my joy recipe gets!

It continues to evolve and no matter how busy my day gets, I find ways to incorporate these joy moments and time blocks for myself.

Like any recipe, sometimes I realize I didn’t add enough or too much of one ingredient, or skipped the recipe all together but sometimes, and a lot more often now than before, I get my recipe just right and I feel like I’m winning my day, with more peace and joy.

When the recipe goes really bad, I clean up the mess (Reflect), let it go, and start right back up again. Perhaps the ingredients or strategy need some tweaks.

Like my dad always said, the best meals require the most magical secret ingredients.

Love, kindness, patience and compassion for ourselves.
